This blood test looks for IgG antibodies your body makes after infection with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), the virus that most often causes cold sores. It shows whether you have been exposed to the virus at some point.
An antibody test cannot tell where on the body the infection is or when you were infected, and it cannot show whether you have an active outbreak. Health authorities generally do not recommend routine herpes screening for people with no symptoms, so consider talking with a clinician about whether this test fits your situation.
