The basic metabolic panel measures eight things: glucose (blood sugar), calcium, sodium, potassium, carbon dioxide, chloride, BUN and creatinine. It gives a quick look at blood sugar, fluid and electrolyte balance, and how well your kidneys are filtering.
People choose it when they want a simple, lower-cost check, or when a doctor has asked them to keep an eye on kidney function or the effects of a medicine.
