This test measures the amount of sugar (glucose) in your blood at the time of your draw. When it is done after fasting, it helps screen for prediabetes and diabetes and shows how well blood sugar is being managed.
People order it as a quick check, when diabetes runs in the family, or to track changes after a change in diet or weight.
Before your visit: fast for at least 8 hours. Water is fine. A single reading is a snapshot, so a doctor may want other tests, such as an A1c, to confirm a result.
