The Y chromosome passes from father to son almost unchanged, so comparing it between two males shows whether they share the same paternal line. It is useful for questions such as whether two men are paternal half-brothers, or whether a man and a boy share a paternal grandfather.
Each male collects a cheek swab with an easy mail-in kit. Y-STR testing shows a shared male line, not the exact relationship, and it is informational only.
