Basic vs. Comprehensive Metabolic Panel: What’s the Difference?

We get this question often enough that it deserves its own answer: what’s actually different between the Basic Metabolic Panel and the Comprehensive one?

The Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) measures eight things: glucose, calcium, sodium, potassium, carbon dioxide, chloride, and two kidney markers (BUN and creatinine). The Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) includes everything in the BMP, plus six additional measurements of liver function.

Which one makes sense for you

  • Choose the BMP if you specifically want kidney function and blood sugar at a lower price, and liver values aren’t a priority
  • Choose the CMP for a broader annual check, or if a doctor has asked about liver function specifically

Neither test requires you to guess — if you’re not sure, the CMP is the safer default, since it includes everything the BMP does.

What to expect

Both require fasting for 8 to 12 hours beforehand.
