Herpes Testing: What a Blood Test Can and Can’t Tell You

Herpes testing is one of the more misunderstood tests we offer, so it’s worth being extra clear about what it actually shows.

Our test looks for IgG antibodies against HSV-1 and HSV-2 (the two herpes simplex virus types) in your blood. A positive result means your body has been exposed to that virus type at some point. What it can’t tell you: where in the body an infection is, when you were exposed, or whether you currently have an active outbreak.

Something worth knowing before you order

Because herpes is extremely common and often causes no symptoms at all, health authorities generally don’t recommend routine testing for people without symptoms — it’s worth a conversation with a healthcare provider about whether this particular test fits your situation, rather than assuming it’s the right first step.

What to expect

No fasting needed. One standard blood draw, reporting both HSV-1 and HSV-2 separately.
