Planning Ahead: Why Rubella Immunity Matters Before Pregnancy

Rubella (sometimes called German measles) is typically a mild illness for most people who catch it. The real concern is contracting it during early pregnancy, when it can cause serious complications for a developing baby.

This test checks for IgG antibodies against rubella. A positive result suggests you’re immune, either from the standard childhood MMR vaccine or from a past infection.

Why this test matters most before pregnancy

If you’re planning to conceive and testing shows you’re not immune, a doctor can recommend the vaccine beforehand — but the MMR vaccine isn’t given during pregnancy itself, which is exactly why checking ahead of time matters.

This is one of the tests included automatically in our Pre-Pregnancy Check bundle, alongside varicella immunity and screening for several infections.
