This is a step up from a standard cholesterol test: it includes everything in a regular lipid panel (total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, cholesterol/HDL ratio, and non-HDL cholesterol) and adds Lipoprotein(a), sometimes written Lp(a).
Lp(a) is a cholesterol-carrying particle whose level is almost entirely set by your genes rather than your diet or lifestyle. A high level is linked to increased heart disease risk independent of your regular cholesterol numbers — and because it’s inherited, most guidelines suggest checking it once in a lifetime rather than repeatedly.
Why people choose this over a standard cholesterol test
- A family history of heart disease or stroke at a young age
- Normal cholesterol numbers but other unexplained cardiovascular risk factors
- Wanting to check a genetic risk factor once, rather than every year
