The 4th generation HIV test looks for both antibodies to HIV and p24 antigen, a part of the virus. Because it checks for both, it can find an infection earlier than antibody-only tests.
People order it as routine screening, after a new partner or possible exposure, or before starting a new relationship. The CDC recommends that everyone aged 13 to 64 be tested for HIV at least once.
Before your visit: no fasting. A test taken very soon after exposure may not detect HIV yet, and a repeat test may be advised. If the first result is reactive, the lab automatically runs follow-up testing to confirm it.
