A lipid panel measures the fats in your blood: total cholesterol, LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, HDL (“good”) cholesterol and triglycerides. Together they help show your risk for heart and blood vessel disease.
People order it as a yearly check, after a change in diet, exercise or medication, or to get a baseline before starting a new plan.
Before your visit: fast for 9 to 12 hours. Water is fine. If your triglycerides are very high, the lab may measure LDL directly instead of calculating it.
