Many people check their immunity and screen for common infections before trying to get pregnant, so anything that needs treatment or a vaccine can be handled first. This bundle checks for antibodies to rubella (German measles) and chickenpox (varicella), and screens for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, chlamydia and gonorrhea.
Some infections can be passed to a baby during pregnancy or birth, and rubella or chickenpox during pregnancy can cause serious problems. If a test shows you are not protected, a doctor can talk with you about vaccination. Some vaccines cannot be given during pregnancy, so it helps to know your status ahead of time.
Good to know: this is not a full prenatal panel. It does not include blood type and Rh, a complete blood count or a urine culture. If you are already pregnant, ask your prenatal provider which labs you need.
Before your visit: no fasting. Do not urinate for about an hour before you give your urine sample. You will give a blood sample and a urine sample. Testing very soon after an exposure may miss an infection. The blood draw fee is included with this bundle.
