PSA is a protein made by the prostate gland. The test measures how much of it is in your blood. Raised levels can have many causes, including an enlarged prostate, infection or inflammation, and prostate cancer.
Whether PSA screening is right for you depends on your age, family history and personal preferences, so it is worth talking it over with a doctor. Many men order it to keep a record of their levels over time.
Before your visit: no fasting is needed. Some doctors suggest avoiding ejaculation and long bike rides for a day or two before the test, because they can raise PSA.
