Urine vs. Hair Drug Testing: Which One Answers Your Question?

We get asked fairly often which type of drug test someone should choose. The honest answer depends entirely on what question you’re trying to answer, because urine and hair testing look at completely different timeframes.

Urine testing: recent use

A urine drug test generally detects use within the past few days, depending on the substance. This is the right choice if you want to know about recent activity — for example, checking your own status now, or shortly after a specific event.

Hair testing: a longer pattern

A hair test looks back roughly 90 days, showing a pattern of use over time rather than a single recent event. A small, cosmetically unnoticeable lock of hair is cut close to the scalp at the lab. This is the better choice if you’re trying to understand a longer-term pattern rather than a single moment.

The trade-off to know

Because hair testing looks back 90 days, it will not detect very recent use — if you specifically need to know about the last few days, urine is the right choice, not hair.

Both are personal, informational tests, not chain-of-custody tests for employment or legal purposes.
